"Look Mama, there's Heaven"

I was just reading Tertia's post about explaining death to her 2-year-old daughter Kate. First it was about explaining the death of her brother before Kate was born and then it was about explaining the dead mouse that their cat may have killed.

It reminded me of when we put Duncan to sleep. She had cancer and we treated it, but it came back and she became very aggressive towards Brian possibly because of pain. We were worried about Jack and the baby on the way. I was 8.5 months pregnant with Victor.

We played with her one last time and took some pictures before we left to go to the vet. Jack and Daddy went with me because I couldn't go alone or I wouldn't have gone through with it and we didn't have anyone to stay with Jack.

Daddy and Jack said good-bye to her and they went out for a walk. I held her while they gave her the injection and for about 25 minutes after she had died. It was one of the hardest things I had to do. We bought Jack a book a few days before about dog's going to Heaven but I could barely read it to him. I still tear up reading it.

Several months later when Jack was about to turn three, we drove by the vet's office and he pointed to it and said, "Look Mama, there's Heaven." Have I mentioned before that I adore this kid?
